What Doesn't Kill You Makes You . . . Tired

This past week has been tough - not only physically but emotionally as well.  I have been studying James 1, which is about facing trials with joy and God giving perfect gifts.  Well, let me tell you, this week brought that scripture to life.

Most of it started on Wednesday.  I had just finished cleaning up lunch and was in the middle of changing diapers before everyone went down for naps.  Huck was all clean, so I set him down in the hallway to play with Jonah while I changed Eli.  No sooner had I taken Eli's diaper off when Huxton came flopping into the room.  Something in my gut told me it was all wrong.  I set Eli down bare bottomed and picked up Huxton.  By this time his lips were already blue, and he wasn't breathing.  My heart started to race and I was in a panic!  My first guess was that he had found something small and choked on it.  I began the Heimlich while moving toward the door to yell at the neighbors.  He just turned bluer and bluer and his eyes started rolling back in his head.  All I can remember is yelling, "No, no"!  I was almost to the door when I raised him for the third time to sweep his mouth.  Nothing ever came out but he took in a breath and turned ghostly white.  Then he began to breath again.  I held him close and took some deep breaths myself.  My heart was racing and then the tears began to flow.  I just couldn't help myself.  What if he hadn't come into the room where I could see  him?  What if I didn't know the Heimlich maneuver?  What if I had lost my little man?  It was all more than I could handle.  I called Danny and the doctor.  Needless to say we spent the rest of the day in the doctor's office and getting x-rays.  No one can really give us a definite reason why Huck stopped breathing and we may never know.  However, nearly losing him made me even more thankful for my little boys.

Thursday, I returned from running to find Eli throwing up and running a fever.  This is his third or fourth fever in the past two months.  He only weighs 14 1/2 pounds and will be one in one month.  So, I took him into the doctor to see what could be causing him to get sick all the time.  It was a virus :/  They hated to tell me, but he is just the weaker one (nothing I didn't already know).  We came home to rest and I noticed a rash on Jonah.  At first I thought it was a heat rash from all his chins :)  Then it started to spread.  Next came the "Mommy, I itchy" and "Mommy, it hurt".  Medicine for Jonah  . . . I could run a pharmacy by now!  My poor boys.  Later that evening Huxton started coming down with the virus.  When it rains it pours!

Friday, we took Huxton for his EKG.  That afternoon Jonah wanted me to lay with him in bed until he fell asleep.  I napped with Jonah for two whole hours :D  Hee hee!

Thankfully, I got to go shopping with my momma today while Danny watched the boys.  I was so happy to get a break and escape the house!  I will be so happy when all my little men are well again!

My Weekend as the Birthday Girl!

This past weekend just so happened to be my birthday!  While most adults hate their birthdays (because they have a way of coming around EVERY year), I happen to LOVE my birthday.  Some say it is only because I am 26, but I think I will still love my birthday when I am 96.  I actually try to make the whole week my birthday week, and until I have a baby in March, I try to make it my birthday month as well.

Anyway, this year I decided to run a half-marathon for my birthday.  Yes, running on my birthday.  I started running back in the winter with a fabulous group of ladies, and I wanted to run a half-marathon as a way to prove to myself that I could be a "runner". (By the way, how much do you have to run to be a "runner"?)  I didn't tell anyone I was going to run just in case I died on the side of the road and never made it to the finish line.  I drug Danny along with me to talk to me and keep me distracted the whole way.  He was a great partner . . . maybe he did have a little too much energy and his hooping and hollering might have been a tad obnoxious to the other runners, but he was perfect for me!

So, after running the 13.1 miles I have to say . . . I am addicted!  I would run another one this weekend if I didn't have a garage and attic to clean out :/  There is just something about all those people coming out to run - everyone running for a different reason.  Yeah, some people are there to be the fastest, but others are there because they just battled cancer or they finally reached a weight loss goal or they want to prove to themselves they are stronger than they believed.  It was inspiring!  That brings me to my new goal - a marathon!  I think I will wait and get settled in our new local before setting a goal of when to run this marathon, but I think it is safe to say I will run it before my 30th birthday :)  (Will I ever be that old?  Scary thought!)

The run was not the only wonderful thing about my special day.  Right before the run Danny gives me one of my presents.  I open a small bag with a passport and tickets for a CRUISE!  I was stoked!  This is our first cruise and I don't even have to wait very long to go - we leave in less than two weeks!

My day had a terrific ending, too!  My fabulous mother made all of my favorite foods (including apple cranberry crisp which is to die for) for dinner and I got to share it with all the people I love most!

Other highlights of my birthday WEEK:

- The lady at the glasses store broke my glasses while trying to adjust them, so I got a new pair for free!
- Jonah learned to swim with water wings!  He wore himself out at the pool.  That boy does love his independence.
- Huxton stood without holding anything for a full 10 seconds before falling back on his bottom!  He will be walking soon!
- After hearing one of those singing cards, Jonah sang "Shake Your Booty" to an elderly lady in the Target checkout line.  How embarrassing!

Well, time to go make the most of my time as the birthday girl of the month!

Our First Trip to Fort Bragg

Towards the end of last week Danny and I took our first trip to Fort Bragg to scope out the area and take care of some business.  I have to admit, I was not all that excited about the trip.  I am not sure why.  Maybe because I had this beautiful picture in my head of what the fort and neighborhoods would look like and I knew they could never look that good. Maybe it was because I really hate leaving my sweet boys.  Maybe it was because I was having one of those days where you just feel blah.  Anyway, Danny was SUPER excited about the trip so I went along.  We left Thursday night and arrived at 11pm.  The GPS took us through the worst part of town to get us to the fort.  Let's just put it in Jonah's words and say "God is sad".  Then the check-in lady at the hotel gave us the wrong room number.  Good thing the people in the room were asleep because we definitely tried to get in their room.  We finally hit the sack at midnight.  Who would have thought riding in a car could be so exhausting?

Friday morning Danny and I went for a long run and came back to find that the hotel was out of hot water!!!  Thankfully, the past night's events and the cold shower made the day only get better.  Were else could it go but up, right?  We were suppose to attend a transportation seminar, but were blessed to meet a sweet lady who "took care of us" so we didn't have to spend four hours of our house hunting day in meetings.

Off we went in search of a house!  At first, I was optimistic and ready to find the perfect little neighborhood.  Three hours later we had looked at one house and hadn't found a neighborhood that would really suit our needs. They were either too pricey, had no yard, too small, too big, too far from base, etc.  However, God sent a very nice realtor our way.  Danny had called her earlier in the day to get some info on a house.  She invited us to come to her office to look at some properties, but I really didn't want to go sit in an office with someone who would push us toward making a decision.  After our attempts at house hunting had failed, she called us back just to check on us.  I finally gave in a we went to her office.  Long story short - she helped us find several properties and narrow our search down to two neighborhoods!  Woohoo!  That makes a city a little less overwhelming!  Now we are waiting until closer to our rental date to choose a specific house.

We went for another run on Saturday, but because there was no PT, I had plenty of nice hot water.   Then, we went to look at some uniform parts for Danny and stopped by to visit some friends on our way home.

Whew!  It was quite a whirlwind trip!  Pretty soon those roads will be a well-beaten path :D
